Movie on 'Pesantren' to Premiere in Malaysia

Tobapos -- A local film set on Lombok Island in West Nusa Tenggara is slated to be screened in 40 cinemas across Malaysia starting Sept. 15.

Titled Kalam Kalam Langit, the movie is said to indirectly promote Lombok as a Muslim destination for Southeast Asian tourists, especially Malaysians, since it focuses on the life of those living in pesantren (Islamic boarding schools).

"[The film] follows Jafar who has to struggle amid a difficult economic situation. To make his mother happy, he enrolls at a pesantren and learns how to read the Quran," said producer Dhoni Ramadhan in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Wednesday as quoted by Antara news agency. Jafar goes on to represent the pesantren in the National Quran Recital Competition (MTQ). "[There's also some romance] as Jafar faces disappointment after Azizah, the daughter of a famous kyai [Islamic leader], is proposed to by a friend in the pesantren," added Dhoni, reported by thejakartapost.com.

Produced by Putaar Films Production, the cast includes noted actors, including Dimas Seto, Elyzia Mulachela, Mathias Muchus, Meriza Febriani, Ibnu Jamil, Ade Firman Hakim and Henidar Amroe.

Indonesia has set its sights on attracting at least 2 million Malaysian tourists this year.  (adm)
